| AMMONITE- There are several types of Ammonites, the largest grow past four feet across in size. These are distant relatives of the Chambered Nautilus. It looked something like an Octopus as it reached with tentacles for food traveling the ocean floor. This fossil is found embedded in stone and must be chipped, ground, and polished to revel the fossil inside. Ammolites were first discovered by the Blackfoot Indians near the Rocky Mountains. They called it "Iniskim" or "the buffalo stone". They believed that it cared a powerful medicine like properties, which woudl turn negative energy into positive while becoming more open minded and genweous. Over 70 million years of the earths tectonic pressure created this beautiful gemstone from the prehistoric ammonite. Canada has one of the largest Ammolite mines in the world. Ammolites iridescence colors range from the brightest reds to the most radiant blues. It is sometime compaired to the black opal. Ammolites were granted gemstone status by the International Commission of Colored Gemstones in 1981. |
